# What is a "seascape"? A "seascape", for the purposes of this library, is a gridded field surrounding a geographical point. The use of the term "seascape" instead of "landscape" or "environment" comes from the fact that XScape was originally developed as part of an [oceanographic research project](https://www.ocean-climat.fr/Le-PPR). In any case, the "background field" you use does not have to be ocean-related. You may use XScape to get land surface temperatures around a city, atmospheric pressure maps around a weather station, or whatever you want. The only requirement is that your field be gridded in a regular latitude/longitude grid at any resolution, and that your point be located somewhere inside that grid.
